The donor area: safe extraction limits

How the donor area works, how many grafts can be taken safely, what over-harvesting looks like, and what a careful doctor does differently.

What is the donor area?

The donor area is the horseshoe-shaped band of hair at the back and sides of the head. This hair is usually less affected by DHT, the hormone behind pattern hair loss, which is why hair moved from here typically lasts.

The donor area holds a limited number of grafts, and follicles taken from it don't grow back there. A responsible doctor plans for today's transplant and for how your hair loss may progress.

How many grafts can be taken safely?

It depends on your donor density (how many follicular units grow per cm²), the size of the area and your hair type. Taking too many from one area risks visible thinning, which is why the clinic's doctor sets the per-session maximum from your donor area, and why the graft range in your quote comes from your photos.

Warning signs of over-harvesting

Over-harvesting is a known risk at cheap, high-volume clinics that take as many grafts as possible in one session without thinking about the future. Signs include a moth-eaten look in the donor area, visible scarring, and thin donor hair that doesn't recover.

A good doctor will sometimes say "no": taking more grafts would damage your donor area, even if you want maximum coverage. That honesty is a sign of quality.

Body hair as a backup

When the scalp donor area is depleted, some clinics offer body hair transplant (BHT) from the beard, chest or legs. Body hair grows differently (a shorter growth cycle, a different texture), so results are less predictable than scalp-to-scalp transplants. Beard hair is usually the closest match; the clinic's doctor tells you whether it's an option in your case.
