Understanding graft count
One of the first questions people ask is "how many grafts do I need?" It depends on your Norwood stage, your hair, your donor density and what coverage you want. This guide gives you a realistic starting point.
Graft ranges by Norwood stage

What changes your number
- Hair thickness: thicker hair covers more per graft; fine hair may need more grafts for the same look.
- Hair and skin contrast: dark hair on light skin shows thinning more; low-contrast combinations (blond on fair, dark on dark) look fuller with fewer grafts.
- Curl and wave: curly hair typically covers more per graft than straight hair.
- Your goal: full density needs more grafts than a natural-looking improvement.
- Donor density: the limiting factor. With below-average donor density the doctor may suggest a conservative plan.
How the doctor sets your number
The doctor looks at donor density (grafts per cm²), the size of the area to cover, the density you want, your hair (thickness, color, curl) and your age and likely future loss. You get a graft range in your written quote from your photos; the final range is confirmed at the clinic before the procedure.
