Do hair transplants leave scars?

Every surgical procedure leaves some scarring. With modern techniques the scars are small and usually hard to see.

FUE scars

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) typically leaves tiny round scars (usually 0.6–0.8 mm each, depending on the punch size) spread across the donor area. They heal as small white dots that are usually hard to see at 3–4 mm and longer.

• Size: typically 0.6–0.8 mm per extraction site
• Visibility: usually hard to see at 3–4 mm and longer
• Healing: typically 7–10 days for the first healing, mature at 3–6 months
• Can you buzz your hair? Most people can buzz to 3–4 mm. Very close shaving (1 mm) may show tiny white dots in bright light.

FUT scars (strip method)

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) leaves one linear scar across the back of the head where a strip of skin was removed. It's an older technique and less common today.

• Size: typically 15–25 cm long and 1–3 mm wide
• Visibility: usually visible when hair is cut shorter than 2–3 cm
• Healing: typically 2–3 weeks for the first healing; the scar matures over 6–12 months

Why FUE is the common choice now

FUE has largely replaced FUT: no linear scar, no stitches, faster recovery and the option of short hairstyles. The partner clinic uses FUE-based techniques only (Sapphire FUE, DHI or a hybrid).

How to keep scarring minimal

Typical guidance — the clinic's written instructions come first.

• Choose an experienced team that uses the right punch sizes
• Follow the aftercare instructions closely
• Don't pick the scabs
• Keep sun off the donor area for 3 months
• Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) can camouflage visible donor scarring
• PRP may support healing around the scars
