Hair transplant for women
Female pattern hair loss is common, yet hair transplants are still less often considered by women. At the partner clinic in Istanbul, women's hair transplants are planned around women's patterns of hair loss, goals and recovery.
The main difference from men is the pattern. Women typically see diffuse thinning across the top and crown rather than a receding hairline, so the goal is usually more density, not a new hairline. Diffuse thinning needs the doctor's assessment, which is why women's cases are quoted after photos.
Common causes of hair loss in women
- Androgenetic alopecia: the most common cause, affecting the central part and the crown. Genetic and hormonal factors play a role.
- Traction alopecia: from tight hairstyles (braids, ponytails, extensions) that pull on follicles over time.
- Hormonal changes: shedding after pregnancy (telogen effluvium), menopause, thyroid conditions and PCOS can all cause hair loss.
- Scarring: earlier surgery (facelift, brow lift), burns or skin conditions that damaged follicles in one area.
Why DHI is often used for women
- No shaving of the thinning area: new follicles go between your existing hairs.
- Small donor area: only a small part of the back of the head is trimmed, easy to hide under longer hair.
- Placement between existing hairs: DHI allows careful placement around the hair you have; some existing hair can shed temporarily, and the clinic's doctor explains this for your case.
- Less visible healing: with the recipient area unshaven, existing hair covers it during recovery.
What to expect
- Photos first: you send photos of your hair loss; the clinic's doctor assesses whether you are a good candidate and suggests a plan.
- At the clinic: in-person assessment of the scalp and donor area.
- Plan: typically 800–3,500 grafts for women, depending on the area (see the table below). The goal is natural density, not a new hairline.
- Procedure: typically 4–6 hours under local anesthesia; you're awake.
- Recovery: most women return to normal activities in 5–7 days. Transplanted hair follows the usual cycle: shedding at weeks 2–8, new growth from months 3–4, and the final result at 12–18 months.

Am I a good candidate?
