The short version
A beard transplant is a long-term option for men with patchy, thin or absent facial hair. It uses the same FUE and DHI techniques as a scalp transplant: individual follicles are taken from the back of the head and placed in the beard, mustache or sideburn area.
How it works
- Consultation: the doctor looks at your facial hair pattern, discusses the density and shape you want, and sets the graft range (typically 1,500–3,500 grafts for a full beard).
- Extraction: follicles are taken from the donor area on the back of the scalp with an FUE micro-punch, under local anesthesia.
- Implantation: follicles are placed one by one at angles that match natural beard growth. DHI is often used here for its angle control.
- Recovery: scabs typically fall off within 7–10 days. New beard hair usually starts growing in months 3–4; the final result takes 12–18 months.
